Animal studies of phthalates have found that they can harm reproductive system development, and studies in humans have found that prenatal exposure or exposure through breast milk can alter hormone concentrations.
- Conventional cotton, which is what the majority of baby clothes, toweling and toys are made of, is the most heavily pesticided crop in the world. In other words, there is no other agricultural crop which has so many chemicals spayed on it. And that is just the growing process! What happens during production is a whole different story.
- Bisphenol A or BPA, a common compund used to manucture baby bottles, has been linked to breast cancer and is a known endocrine dispupter. On June 30 2010 the Australian Government announced that BPA bottles would be phased out in Australia.
All this sounds a little scary but need not be. It is now easier than every to buy organic and eco-friendly newborn baby gifts without all the nasties.
